Description
In The Edge of Slumber, the artist utilizes an oval “tondo” format to create a portal into a serene, nocturnal realm. The composition is defined by a dramatic textural contrast: the lower third of the canvas features a thick, impasto application of brilliant white paint, creating a rugged, cloud-like terrain that physically protrudes from the surface. This heavy, grounded texture serves as the launching point for a lone, dark silhouette standing at the precipice of a vast, starlit indigo sky. The work explores the transition between the tangible and the infinite. As the eye moves upward from the tactile “mountain” of white, the paint becomes smooth and atmospheric, shifting through gradients of periwinkle and deep violet. The scattered celestial bodies and the singular, glowing moon provide a sense of navigational hope within the dark. It is a meditation on the moment of quiet reflection that occurs when one reaches the highest point of their journey and looks out into the unknown. “We find our greatest courage at the border where the solid earth meets the infinite stars.”
