Description
In Grounded, the artist explores the invisible labor of emotional regulation. The towering black creature, reaching high into a turbulent, cloud-filled sky, represents the experience of an autistic individual during or after a crisis—feeling immense, overstimulated, and perhaps dangerously disconnected from the physical world. The figure is so tall it risks losing itself in the smoky “noise” of the atmosphere. The heart of the painting lies at the very bottom, where tiny, delicate silhouettes stand by the giant’s feet. These small creatures are the anchors. They represent the support system—the people, the touch, or the quiet presence that provides the “grounding” necessary to bring a person back to themselves after the world has become too much. The painting honors the relationship between the one who feels “too big” for their environment and the one who has the strength to hold them down. “When the mind reaches the height of a storm, the heart survives because someone else is holding onto the roots.”
